Mechanical nano chips the future of computing?

US researchers have borrowed heavily from Babbage's 'difference engine' and look set to create tiny, mechanical chips that are sparking interest from the automotive and military industries.

Although slower than silicon chips, these 'nano-machines' could be used in areas, where power consumption and chip durability are prime considerations.

It is also thought that hybrid, mechanical/silicon chips could help chip manufacturers keep pace with Moore's Law.

3D Web Browsing

Details are emerging about a new program that allows users to search for and view web pages, or more importantly, images in a slick 3D environment. The program is called SpaceTime and despite being particularly memory hungry, it looks like the future of web searching.

The software is currently available as a beta version from www.spacetime.com.

PC World goes 'green'

Details are emerging on PC World's newcarbon neutral PC. The machine will have a monitor, keyboard and mousemade from sustainable wood sources. In addition to this the PC casingwill be made from recycled aluminium and use an external power supply,eliminating the need for an internal fan.
